Kathak

Kathak (from Katha=story) is one of the Indian classical dances which originated in north India. It has three major schools or gharanas: Benares, Jaipur and Lucknow. Kathak originated with the performances of professional story-tellers who recited or sang stories from epics and mythology with or without dance. Its present form also has traces of temple and ritual dances. It also has been influenced by bhakti movement and Persian and Central Asian dance which were imported in the Mughal period.
